Numbering history

How the Numbering Plan Developed

The in-force Telecommunications Numbering Plan 2025 defines Australia’s current number categories and geographic allocation tables. ACMA notified ITU of an updated +61 plan in March 2026. Australia uses four broad geographic regions rather than a separate area code for every city.

Coverage and identity limitation

The four geographic codes cover large regions and multiple cities, and 08 spans several time zones. Some providers permit out-of-area local-number porting, so a prefix is not conclusive proof of current physical location. Mobile, 13, 1300, 1800, IoT and special-service numbers are not geographic.

Do I keep the domestic prefix when using +61?

No. Remove the domestic trunk prefix 0 before adding +61.
