Numbering history

How the Plan Developed

Subscriber trunk dialling area codes were introduced from the late 1950s. Numbering administration passed from BT to the independent regulator in 1994. PhONEday on 16 April 1995 inserted 1 after the trunk prefix in geographic codes, and the Big Number Change on 22 April 2000 introduced several 02 wide-area codes.

Coverage and identity limitation

UK geographic codes vary in length and represent telephone numbering areas, not administrative borders or live caller locations. Portability, forwarding and internet telephony can separate a number from its original area or network. The +44 arrangement also covers Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, which are Crown Dependencies and not part of the United Kingdom.
